The Australian government is set to ban AI “nudify” and deepfake apps, responding to the rising threat these technologies pose for criminal activities, including fraud and child exploitation. With advancements in AI making it easy to create lifelike images using minimal data, concerns about non-consensual content have intensified. Australian eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant emphasized the alarming speed at which these technologies are proliferating, needing only basic inputs from social media. Communications Minister Anika Wells stated the government’s commitment to using all available measures to protect citizens, particularly children, from the harm these applications can cause. Proposed legislation, initially introduced by Independent MP Kate Chaney in July, aims to make possession of such apps a criminal offense, potentially leading to severe penalties of up to 15 years in prison. The government will collaborate with tech platforms to effectively curb access to these harmful AI tools, aiming for a safer online environment in Australia.
