Agentic AI system functions as autonomous drilling engineer

Norway-based Pions (formerly eDrilling) has launched the next generation of its AI-powered engineer, Ida, enhancing its capabilities for advanced reasoning and complex task management. Notable upgrades since December 2024 include a new feature extractor that improves adaptability and efficiency in real-world environments. The latest version features dynamic transient modeling, comprehensive data search, retrieval, analysis, and seamless integration with existing energy industry tools and workflows.

CEO Toni Fadnes highlights that Ida functions as an autonomous, high-performance drilling engineer using advanced large language models (LLMs) to embody agentic AI principles, allowing it to plan, reason, and act independently. Its hybrid datasets combine physics and data to ensure accuracy, building trust among users. The system’s multi-agent architecture enables sub-agents to specialize in tasks like monitoring and optimization, achieving full-stack autonomy. Currently, the technology is being piloted by operators and is also undergoing external testing as an AI-powered thinking partner for drilling engineers.
