Hachette Book Group and Cengage Group have filed a motion in a California federal court to intervene in a class action lawsuit against Google, accusing the tech giant of copyright infringement for using their books in AI training. The publishers assert that Google illicitly downloaded copyrighted material from pirate sites like Z-Library and OceanofPDF to build its Gemini AI platform without proper licenses. The complaint highlights that Google’s C4 training dataset allegedly includes content from at least 28 piracy-linked websites, where the copyright symbol appears over 200 million times. The publishers are seeking statutory damages, injunctions to stop further infringement, and demands for Google to destroy unauthorized copies of their works.
