A four-legged Boston Dynamics robot called Spot walks down the hallway of an industrial facility. A human worker wearing a bright yellow safety vest is starting to cross the hallway behind the robot.

Boston Dynamics’ Spot robot, enhanced by Google DeepMind’s Gemini Robotics-ER 1.6 model, now excels at reading analog thermometers and pressure gauges in industrial settings. Launched on April 14, this AI model focuses on ’embodied reasoning,’ enabling robots to perform complex visual inspections. Spot is being tested in various industrial facilities, including automotive plants owned by Hyundai Motor Group, serving as a robotic inspector. The Gemini Robotics-ER 1.6 offers a groundbreaking “agentic vision” that integrates visual reasoning with advanced task execution, significantly improving performance from 23% accuracy to an impressive 98% in instrument reading. Even without agentic vision, it achieves 86% accuracy through effective image processing techniques. This model represents a significant leap in robotic capabilities, allowing for enhanced multi-view reasoning and a better understanding of physical environments. These advancements demonstrate the promising future of robots in industrial applications, driving efficiency and accuracy in various tasks.
