On October 20, the Brown University Office of Information Technology (OIT) launched “Transcribe,” the first AI tool developed by the Brown AI Sandbox, aimed at enhancing the university’s resources. This initiative follows the previous introduction of Google AI services, including Google Gemini Chat and NotebookLM, available for students through their Brown accounts. Transcribe, noted for its superior performance and cost-effectiveness compared to commercial alternatives, specifically aids faculty in social sciences conducting interviews. Available in multiple languages, it caters to diverse academic needs. Despite concerns about AI misuse, faculty believe students will prioritize genuine learning. The OIT ensures data security, having cleared Gemini and NotebookLM for sensitive data use. Future AI tool developments in the sandbox include Librechat, aimed at fostering AI literacy within the university community. Some faculty are already integrating AI into their curricula, highlighting Brown’s commitment to responsible AI adoption in education.
