ByteDance is addressing concerns over its AI tool, Seedance 2.0, after complaints from Hollywood studios regarding unauthorized intellectual property use. The company stated its commitment to upholding intellectual property rights and acknowledged feedback from industry groups. Seedance 2.0, launched recently, sparked controversy as users created deepfake videos featuring likenesses of well-known actors like Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, along with iconic characters from franchises such as Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings.
The Motion Picture Association and SAG-AFTRA have criticized the tool, while Disney issued a cease-and-desist letter. Recently, Paramount Skydance followed suit, alleging copyright infringement relating to properties like Star Trek and SpongeBob SquarePants. Paramount emphasized that its intellectual property was used without consent to train Seedance’s underlying models, constituting a legal violation. As ByteDance strengthens safeguards, it faces mounting pressure to respect and protect intellectual property rights in the AI landscape.
