Volcano Engine, the cloud division of ByteDance, recently introduced a new coding agent, Doubao-Seed-Code, priced at a promotional rate of 9.9 yuan (US$1.30) for the first month. This launch reflects the intense competition in China’s thriving AI developer tools market. Following the promotion on November 11, coinciding with China’s Singles’ Day, the standard subscription will be 40 yuan monthly. ByteDance is ramping up its focus on artificial intelligence, with Doubao chatbot usage doubling over the past six months, according to Volcano Engine president Tan Dai. This surge in AI adoption among Chinese consumers bolsters ByteDance’s status as a global AI leader. Notably, the new coding agent recently achieved a record on the SWE-Bench Verified test, rivaling renowned models like Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet. This launch occurs amid rising tensions in the global AI sector, highlighted by Anthropic’s limitations on access for Chinese subsidiaries.
