The competition among AI apps in China is heating up as ByteDance’s Doubao chatbot joins the giveaway frenzy, rivaling Alibaba and Tencent. On Tuesday, ByteDance announced it would distribute over 100,000 tech products, including robots, drones, and high-end electric vehicles, alongside cash prizes of up to 8,888 yuan (approximately $1,284) through lucky draws on the Doubao app in celebration of the Lunar New Year. The products, linked to Doubao’s advanced language model, include offerings from Unitree and DJI. Unlike traditional ownership, winners of certain tech items will have usage rights instead. This strategic move intensifies the rivalry among major players like Tencent, Alibaba, and Baidu, each investing billions in attracting users to their AI services during the Spring Festival. As a result, ByteDance’s Doubao app saw a surge in downloads, surpassing Tencent’s Yuanbao and securing a top spot in China’s Apple App Store.
