ByteDance has launched Doubao 2.0, its upgraded AI model, aiming to capture attention during the Lunar New Year alongside other Chinese tech firms. Last year, the unexpected global success of DeepSeek surprised investors, highlighting China’s ability to produce advanced AI at a lower cost than competitors like OpenAI. In anticipation of a new DeepSeek model, ByteDance’s Doubao 2.0 is designed for the “agent era,” enabling substantial real-world task execution, with advanced reasoning capabilities. This pro version significantly reduces usage costs, making it competitive against OpenAI’s GPT 5.2 and Google’s Gemini 3 Pro. Doubao 2.0 is already leading the market with 155 million weekly active users in China, outpacing DeepSeek, which has 81.6 million. This launch also positions ByteDance to effectively respond to domestic rivals, such as Alibaba, which is enhancing its Qwen AI app’s user base through promotional campaigns.
