ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has launched Doubao, China’s leading AI chatbot with over 157 million active users as of August 2023. Its international counterpart, Cici, features a similar design but is currently unavailable in both China and the U.S., making it less recognized. ByteDance is actively marketing Cici in the UK, Mexico, and Southeast Asia, running over 400 ads emphasizing its math-solving capabilities and free access. Recently, Cici has climbed the ranks in app stores, ranking among the top 20 free apps in markets like Indonesia and Mexico. Despite its ties to ByteDance being discreet, the app utilizes technology from ByteDance platforms and relies on OpenAI’s GPT and Google’s Gemini for text generation. While Cici lacks some advanced features found in Doubao, its growth indicates ByteDance’s commitment to expanding its global footprint amidst stiff competition from Western AI competitors.
