A recent AI tool named Waldo has reviewed over 430,000 Reddit posts related to cannabis use, identifying over 28,000 instances of users sharing potentially harmful side effects. This analysis, conducted by researchers and published in PLOS Digital Health, highlights significant issues with unregulated cannabis products. The study found that 86% of flagged posts showcased problematic experiences, underscoring the value of monitoring social media for health insights that traditional methods, like CDC surveys, might miss. Many individuals lack access to healthcare, making online platforms crucial for sharing health concerns. Researchers emphasize the importance of AI tools like Waldo in identifying adverse effects of widely used substances, particularly among younger demographics. While the tool excelled compared to other AI systems, caution is advised as it may not transfer well to other types of products. Future applications could link individuals with health issues to public health assistance, enhancing consumer safety and awareness.
