Canada Summons OpenAI Officials for Failing to Report School Shooter’s ChatGPT Account Suspension

Canadian officials recently summoned OpenAI representatives after the tech firm failed to notify police about a user whose account was suspended for violent content and who later committed one of Canada’s deadliest school shootings. In June 2025, 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar’s account was flagged by OpenAI’s automated systems for violent scenarios, but the company did not alert authorities, deeming the threat “not credible.” Tragically, on February 10, 2025, Van Rootselaar killed eight people, including five students, after committing murders at her home. Following the incident, the Canadian Artificial Intelligence Minister, Evan Solomon, expressed deep concern over the lack of timely communication with law enforcement. OpenAI called the shooting a “devastating tragedy” and pledged support for investigations. The incident has fueled discussions on the need for regulations surrounding AI and the safety of minors in digital environments, a vital issue for the Canadian government as it struggles to draft an effective bill.
