The Indian government informed the Lok Sabha that while AI tools are being tested in courts, there are no formal policies guiding their use, as these technologies are still in a pilot phase under the e-Courts Project Phase III. Minister of State Arjun Ram Meghwal stated that AI solutions operate under the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of this phase. The e-Courts project, part of the National e-Governance Plan with a budget of ₹7,210 crore, aims to enhance ICT infrastructure in the judiciary for better productivity and access to justice. An allocation of ₹53.57 crore is designated for future AI and blockchain advancements. The Supreme Court’s Artificial Intelligence Committee is exploring AI applications in the judiciary, while addressing concerns regarding algorithmic bias and data privacy. Current AI tools like the Legal Research Analysis Assistant (LegRAA) are in pilot use, with no reported issues. The initiative emphasizes a reliable, transparent judicial process.
