OpenAI, led by CEO Sam Altman, aims to transform ChatGPT from a conversational tool to a versatile digital assistant that interacts with third-party applications. Announced during OpenAI’s Dev Day, this initiative enables users to connect directly with apps like Spotify and Canva, showcased through live demos. For instance, ChatGPT generated a Spotify playlist based on users’ preferences and created a visually appealing poster for a dog-walking business using Canva’s integration. Users must grant permission for initial app connections, after which the integrations can be used seamlessly in future chats. Starting now, apps like Booking.com, Expedia, Coursera, and Zillow are available for connection, with more anticipated, such as DoorDash and Uber. Additionally, OpenAI plans to introduce an app directory for easier discovery and submission by developers. This strategic move aligns with OpenAI’s vision of agentic AI and sets the stage for future monetization opportunities.
