According to Similarweb, ChatGPT is transforming news consumption patterns significantly. Over just six months, active users of the ChatGPT app surged by 116% year-over-year, with web usage rising by 52%. Between January 2024 and May 2025, news-related prompts in ChatGPT skyrocketed by 212%, even as Google search queries dipped by 5%. This shift, particularly pronounced from early 2025, indicates a growing preference for AI-driven news over traditional platforms.
The majority of prompts focus on real-time topics like stocks (33%) and finance (21%), but there’s notable growth in political inquiries and broader socio-economic issues. ChatGPT referrals to news sites increased dramatically, leaping from under 1 million to over 25 million visits in the same timeframe, benefiting partners like Reuters and Business Insider. Conversely, Google’s role as a news gateway is diminishing, with organic traffic to publishers plummeting from over 2.3 billion to below 1.7 billion, prompting growing concerns among news outlets.
