China is expediting the rollout of its upgraded “5G plus industrial internet” to enhance manufacturing through advanced artificial intelligence (AI) integration, as announced by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). This initiative builds on significant progress during the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), achieving complete targets for 5G-enabled smart factories across 41 major sectors. MIIT plans to introduce new pilot cities to explore integrated 5G applications and synergize with emerging 6G tech. Over 20,000 “5G plus industrial internet” projects are currently under construction, demonstrating a shift from pilot testing to large-scale implementation. In Quanzhou, a smart factory is utilizing 5G for machine-vision systems, resulting in automated quality checks. MIIT data shows that leading smart factories have increased production capacity by 25%, improved product quality by 21%, and reduced operating costs by 19%. This digital transformation is essential for China’s modernization of its industrial landscape, leveraging the power of 5G and AI.
