Chinese scientists have launched an innovative AI model, DePTH-GPT, designed to revolutionize deep-sea exploration. Utilizing advanced technologies such as deep learning, large language models, and computer vision, DePTH-GPT analyzes various data types, including video footage and bioacoustics, enhancing our understanding of ocean ecosystems. This cutting-edge model represents a shift from traditional qualitative methods to a more intelligent, predictive approach, significantly impacting deep-sea research. Developed under the Digital DEPTH project, which aligns with the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, DePTH-GPT has already created an intelligent cognitive system for deep-sea environments like seamounts and hydrothermal vents. Moving forward, this model will be accessible for global research institutions, fostering collaboration in the study of diverse deep-sea habitats such as abyssal plains and continental slopes.
