A recent OpenAI report revealed that a Chinese law enforcement officer misused ChatGPT to review cyber operation reports, exposing a global campaign to harass and silence critics of the Chinese government. The findings indicate that a single ChatGPT account was involved in orchestrating cyber operations, including attempts to plan propaganda against Japanese leader Sanae Takaichi. Evidence shows substantial resources were allocated to suppress dissent, employing hundreds of operatives and thousands of fake accounts across social media platforms. Tactics included mass posting, false complaints, and impersonation. Concurrently, a cluster of accounts sought U.S. information using VPNs and Simplified Chinese. Although ChatGPT has been utilized in various nefarious activities, the report does not indicate usage for automated cyberattacks. Instead, the AI serves as a supplementary tool in broader cyber schemes. OpenAI emphasizes that malicious actors continue to explore AI’s potential, highlighting the ongoing evolution of digital threats.
