Cognition acquires AI coding startup Windsurf to compete with OpenAI, Anthropic, Cursor

Cognition, the innovative startup behind AI coding agent Devin, has announced its acquisition of AI coding company Windsurf. This strategic move includes Windsurf’s intellectual property, product, trademark, and team, which will continue operations as usual. Cognition plans to invest significantly in integrating Windsurf’s unique capabilities into their existing products, positioning itself as a formidable force in the AI coding landscape.

This acquisition follows the recent hiring of Windsurf’s CEO Varun Mohan by Google in a $2.4 billion reverse acquihire. Despite earlier acquisition talks with OpenAI, Cognition has stepped in, showcasing its commitment to innovation in the AI space. Windsurf boasts $82 million in Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR) and a robust customer base of 350 enterprise clients.

Cognition CEO Scott Wu emphasized the importance of team unity and respect for employees. This acquisition enhances Cognition’s competitive edge against industry giants like OpenAI and Anthropic, signaling an exciting phase for both companies.
