Coinbase has unveiled a new tool named “Payments MCP” that enhances agentic commerce by enabling AI agents to access on-chain financial tools, such as wallets, stablecoin payments, and on-ramps. Currently compatible with large language models like Claude Desktop, Codex, and Gemini, Payments MCP facilitates wallet creation and sign-in via email, offers customization through a user-friendly interface, and includes an x402 Bazaar Explorer for discovering APIs and services. The tool supports on-ramp transactions and guest checkouts in specific regions, ensuring swift and secure operations from users’ desktops. Coinbase emphasizes that Payments MCP empowers AI agents to actively participate in the global economy, enabling them to handle tasks such as paying for services and managing business operations autonomously. This initiative aligns with the growing trend in agentic commerce, despite security and governance concerns highlighted by recent research revealing only 15% of CFOs are experimenting with agentic AI technologies.
