Computer Science Students Voice Concerns Over Career Prospects Amid Rising AI Influence

Computer science concentrators concerned about career as AI prevalence increases

Computer science at Brown remains popular, but concerns are rising about the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on career opportunities. With AI capable of writing code, many students in the field, like Nitin Sudarsanam ’28 and Samantha Friedler ’27, express anxiety over job competition and the obsolescence of their skills. Sudarsanam plans to balance his concentration with economics, while Friedler sees her dual focus as an advantage. Despite these worries, both acknowledge that computer science will remain relevant, albeit with a shift towards AI systems. Daniel Schiffman ’27 highlights that AI could automate mundane tasks, freeing humans for more creative roles, and that understanding AI could provide computer science students a competitive edge. Brown’s Computer Science Department is addressing these changes by advising students on integrating AI into their skillsets while emphasizing the necessity of traditional coding skills for success in the evolving tech landscape.
