In late December 2025, Elon Musk’s chatbot Grok faced a significant setback with the launch of a one-click image editing tool on X. While intended to enhance user experience, it quickly became notorious for being misused to create millions of sexualized images, including depictions of children. Within just eleven days, Grok generated an estimated three million sexualized images, prompting governments worldwide to take action. The Center for Countering Digital Hate revealed that approximately 65% of all images produced were sexualized, leading to severe public backlash and regulatory scrutiny. Despite implementing safeguards, such as restricting access to paid subscribers and adding technical blocks, the damage had already been done. The incident highlights the urgent need for stronger AI governance that anticipates misuse rather than reactive measures. As generative AI technologies evolve rapidly, aligning legal frameworks with technological advancements remains crucial to prevent future controversies like Grok’s case.
