OpenAI is contesting a federal court order mandating the release of 20 million ChatGPT conversation logs to The New York Times in a copyright infringement dispute. The AI company argues this request represents a significant invasion of user privacy, affecting over 99.99% of conversations unrelated to the case. OpenAI’s security chief, Dane Stuckey, warned that private discussions, including sensitive topics, could be exposed to the Times’ legal team. The lawsuit arose from allegations that OpenAI used Times articles to train ChatGPT without permission. Although Magistrate Judge Ona Wang has sided with The Times, setting a November 14 deadline for the logs, OpenAI proposed narrower alternatives that were rejected. The Times countered OpenAI’s privacy concerns, emphasizing their anonymization processes. This case reflects the ongoing legal challenges AI companies face regarding the use of copyrighted material as training data.
