Midjourney has launched its first AI video model, V1, allowing users to transform still images into short video clips. This feature, currently web-only and free for all users, lets individuals upload personal or AI-generated images. By selecting the ‘Animate’ option, users can create up to four five-second clips from a single image, extendable to a total of 20 seconds. Users can choose between Automatic and Manual animation modes, influencing motion via prompts. Two camera styles—low-motion and high-motion—are available for different levels of dynamism. Video generation is resource-intensive, consuming eight times more GPU time than still images. While all tiers can access the tool, a monthly subscription starting at $10 is necessary for faster video creation. Fast mode limits monthly GPU usage, while Relax Mode allows unlimited generation for Pro subscribers, albeit with longer wait times. CEO David Holz anticipates improvements in the tool’s performance and cost-efficiency.
