On October 7, 2025, CSIRO and Indigenous partners revealed that artificial intelligence (AI) could enhance healthcare for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, provided it’s guided by Indigenous knowledge. Dr. Andrew Goodman emphasized that existing AI frameworks often overlook cultural diversity, creating a gap in their application for Indigenous peoples. The “Artificial Intelligence for Healthcare in Australian Indigenous Communities: Scoping Project” engaged 53 leaders to identify critical priorities for responsible AI use: building AI health literacy, protecting Indigenous data sovereignty, and ensuring self-determination in AI design. Both Dr. Goodman and Dr. Jill Gallagher highlighted the necessity of Indigenous-led governance to avoid bias and empower communities.
