The Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency (DCSA) is enhancing its insider threat detection capabilities through artificial intelligence and structured professional judgment tools, as noted by James Shappell, the director of the agency’s Insider Threat Management and Analysis Center. At a recent Intelligence and National Security Alliance webinar, Shappell emphasized the initiative’s focus on accelerating early threat detection while maintaining essential human oversight. The agency is centralizing data to facilitate timely, risk-based decisions and ensure that human analysts remain integral to the process. DCSA is also aligning its data with established assessment tools like WAVR-21 and TRAP-18 to effectively identify risk signals. Shappell highlighted the importance of using research-backed methodologies to reduce bias and enhance response times. By integrating AI with expert judgment, DCSA aims to improve insider threat management across the department, fostering a proactive approach to national security.
