India has launched its first AI-driven diabetic retinopathy (DR) program aimed at combating blindness among diabetic patients. With diabetic retinopathy being a leading cause of visual impairment, this initiative focuses on early detection and community outreach. Spearheaded by the Armed Forces Medical Services in partnership with the Dr Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Science and other organizations, the program uses MadhuNetrAI, a web-based AI tool for efficient screening. Initially, the program targets seven locations, including Pune and Bengaluru, with screenings done by trained healthcare professionals. The importance of DR screening cannot be overstated, as timely detection, education, and appropriate treatment can significantly mitigate risks. With diabetes prevalence rising in India, particularly in urban areas, initiatives like this are essential for improving eye health and reducing the incidence of diabetic eye diseases. This proactive approach is crucial given India’s position as the second-largest nation impacted by diabetes globally.
