India’s AI startup Sarvam.AI has launched Indus, a chat interface designed to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. Built on Sarvam’s 105 billion sovereign model, Indus focuses on accuracy, usefulness, efficiency, and cultural alignment for Indian users. The app is currently in limited beta on both iOS and Android due to constrained compute capacity, leading to a waitlist for some users. Sarvam.AI emphasizes the importance of building Sovereign AI with input from local users, developers, and researchers. Co-founder Pratyush Kumar highlighted a commitment to user feedback and improvement. As of now, the app has garnered over 10,000 downloads on Google Playstore and is aimed at users aged 13 and above, distinguishing itself from American competitors that have faced criticism regarding minors’ mental health.
