Doctors Question the Use of Generative AI Among Their Colleagues

Doctors Skeptical of Their Peers Who Use Generative AI

A recent study highlights the mixed perceptions among clinicians regarding the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in medical decision-making. While generative AI can enhance decision accuracy, physicians using it as their primary tool receive lower ratings for clinical skills and competence compared to those who do not use AI. The research, led by Haiyang Yang, PhD, from Johns Hopkins University, indicates that framing AI as a verification aid improves ratings slightly but still falls short of non-AI users’ evaluations. With over 70% of healthcare organizations adopting or planning to integrate AI, the implementation of these tools needs careful consideration to avoid reinforcing existing disparities. The findings suggest that reliance on AI could be perceived as a weakness, despite its recognized benefits. Experts emphasize the necessity of educating physicians on effectively using AI to ensure its equitable application in clinical settings. As AI becomes integral to healthcare, reevaluating its role will be crucial for future practices.
