A recent study, “Your Brain on ChatGPT,” reveals that using AI for writing can negatively affect cognitive functions. Researchers from MIT Media Lab, led by Nataliya Kos-Myna, found that students who relied on AI tools like ChatGPT exhibited reduced brain connectivity and retention of information compared to those who wrote independently. While the ChatGPT group struggled to recall their essays just 60 seconds later, the non-AI group showed high retention. Dr. Barry Gordon emphasized the importance of engaging the brain during writing, suggesting that initial mental effort enhances learning. The study also found that participants who previously engaged their minds before using AI performed better. This prompts considerations on integrating AI in education, stressing the importance of developing critical questioning and writing skills, especially for younger generations. As AI becomes ubiquitous, fostering a balance between technology use and cognitive engagement is crucial for sustaining creativity and critical thinking.
