Dragon Quest X, Square Enix’s MMORPG launched on Wii in 2012, continues to receive updates into 2026. The latest addition introduces an AI-powered chatbot featuring the iconic blue Slime, developed in collaboration with Google’s Gemini language model. This Slime companion will engage players in conversation, offering gameplay tips and world information. While the integration of a chatbot may seem innovative, it raises concerns about developers addressing non-existent issues rather than enhancing player experiences with technology. This move appears to be a test for Square Enix, potentially paving the way for similar AI features in other titles. Yuji Horii, Dragon Quest’s creator, anticipates AI will significantly influence gaming within the next three to five years. Currently, Dragon Quest X is only available in Japan, which contrasts with the global appeal of Final Fantasy XIV, suggesting a possible future rollout of AI-driven features if results prove favorable.
