Square Enix is enhancing player interaction in the Japan-exclusive MMO Dragon Quest X by introducing a “conversational AI” companion called Chatty Slimey, in collaboration with Google. As detailed by the Japanese newspaper Sankei, Slimey engages players through chat, generating voices and initiating conversations based on game events like defeating powerful enemies or acquiring rare items. A beta test for this feature is set, with applications closing on March 30th. DQX development lead Takashi Anzai noted that Slimey aims to support new players, acting as a personal companion. Google Cloud’s Jack Buser predicts AI will significantly impact gaming in the next few years. While AI chatbots have appeared in other games, concerns about manipulation and emotional complexities persist. As the gaming industry experiments with AI technology, its role in RPGs remains contentious. Stay updated with this and other exciting gaming developments!
