Emergence of AI Agents Presents New Information Security Risks, Warns Okta

In the era of agentic AI, robust identity and governance frameworks are essential for businesses. As AI agents can significantly outnumber human employees, traditional security models—which cater primarily to human users—fail to meet these new demands. Okta President Shiv Ramji highlights the urgency of implementing strong authentication and granular permissions for AI agents, emphasizing that uncontrolled access could expose organizations to data breaches and policy violations.

Despite the rapid deployment of AI agents—potentially 90% of organizations are involved—only around 10% have clear governance protocols in place. Ramji stresses the necessity for AI agents to have an identity akin to human employees to ensure accountability. Key strategies include contextual permissions, human oversight, and scalable security interactions.

Additionally, Okta’s collaboration with McLaren demonstrates the importance of identity management in enhancing the fan experience, showcasing how effective credential management is vital across digital interfaces. As AI integration becomes mainstream, establishing solid identity governance is paramount for safeguarding business assets.
