For-profit education technology (EdTech) firms have significantly impacted classrooms, yet student outcomes have declined drastically. Reading and math scores are at historic lows, and mental health issues among students are rising. The untested AI tools pushed by these companies threaten further deterioration of learning and student well-being. With nearly 50 million American children in K-12 public schools, it’s crucial that federal education policy not be dictated by profit-driven motives. Schools must seek a balance—investing in AI education without allowing AI to dominate teaching practices. Establishing a federal AI EdTech certification program can ensure that firms meet safety and pedagogical guidelines before introducing products in schools. This policy would restore standards, prioritize student safety, and foster effective learning environments. Misalignment between company incentives and student outcomes must be addressed to cultivate a responsible and beneficial educational landscape, safeguarding the future of American education.
