On September 23, 2024, the UN General Assembly adopted the Global Digital Compact, initiating a new dialogue on AI governance set for July in Geneva. This Global Dialogue, launched by the UNGA President, aims to incorporate citizen voices, acknowledging the lessons from climate change discussions. Current AI governance dialogues often overlook the everyday experiences of individuals impacted by AI in various sectors, thereby risking irrelevance.
To enhance this engagement, two key actions are proposed: first, the Independent International Scientific Panel on AI should prioritize social and environmental impacts alongside public attitudes toward AI. Second, a robust mechanism must ensure direct citizen involvement in these discussions. By fostering a collaborative atmosphere, harnessing citizen perspectives can lead to meaningful governance. Engaging diverse stakeholders will promote trust and ensure governance frameworks genuinely reflect public concerns, making this initiative vital for cohesive global AI strategies.
