The retail landscape is rapidly transforming with the rise of agentic commerce, where AI performs tasks on behalf of users. Last year, we launched agentic tools for smoother shopping experiences, including the secure Agent Payments Protocol (AP2). Today, we’re excited to announce the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard designed to streamline the entire shopping journey — from discovery to post-purchase support. UCP establishes a shared language for seamless interactions among agents, consumers, businesses, and payment providers, eliminating the need for unique connections for each agent. This versatile protocol supports various verticals and integrates with existing standards like Agent2Agent (A2A) and Model Context Protocol (MCP). Co-developed with industry giants such as Shopify, Etsy, and Walmart, UCP has garnered endorsements from over 20 major players, including American Express and Mastercard. By embracing UCP, retailers can unlock significant growth opportunities in the evolving agentic commerce ecosystem.
