Internal MCP registry and allowlist controls for VS Code Insiders

Enterprise and organization administrators can now set up MCP registries and test allowlist enforcement in VS Code Insiders, paving the way for broader implementation across Copilot environments. An MCP registry catalogs approved MCP servers, enhancing discovery and allowlisting for organizations. Administrators can upload internal registry URLs on the Copilot policies page. There are two enforcement options: “Allow all,” which acts as a recommendation, and “Registry only,” which restricts server usage to the uploaded registry. While VS Code Insiders fully supports registry display and enforcement, VS Code Stable users have limited functionality, with registry servers appearing but no strict enforcement yet. Upcoming phases include enhanced configuration matching in October and additional integrations for JetBrains, Eclipse, and Xcode. This MCP feature is exclusive to Copilot Business and Enterprise customers, allowing for streamlined registry testing before widespread rollout. For detailed setup instructions, refer to the provided configuration guide.
