The OpenTelemetry project is enhancing its capabilities to support artificial intelligence (AI) agents, aiming to streamline observability by allowing telemetry data collection from AI applications alongside traditional software. Morgan McLean, co-founder of OpenTelemetry and director at Splunk, notes that semantic extensions will enable comprehensive analysis without needing separate platforms for AI agents. The adoption of OpenTelemetry is increasing, thanks to easier deployment processes, such as automatic data source discovery by the OpenTelemetry collector. Cisco recently introduced AI agents for the Splunk Observability platform, which automate telemetry data collection and issue resolution. Additionally, Cisco launched the Data Fabric platform for scalable machine data aggregation and announced a large language model (LLM) that integrates various data types into its AI Canvas. This convergence of observability and IT monitoring tools promises to simplify management of complex modern IT environments, potentially reducing manual workflows while keeping IT teams engaged in validating AI actions.
