AI in Education: Balancing Innovation and Cognitive Skills
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing education, affecting content delivery and institutional operations. However, a critical concern is the potential erosion of cognitive skills among K–12 students. Excessive reliance on AI may result in shallow learning and diminished critical thinking, as students may prefer instant answers over thoughtful reflection. To combat these issues, a structured approach is crucial. Utilizing a three-layer framework for responsible AI adoption—comprising cognition-centered AI design, responsible AI controls, and ecosystem-wide AI literacy—ensures that AI supports rather than replaces student learning. This framework is rooted in TCS 5A Framework for Responsible AI© and TCS SAFTI© principles, emphasizing the importance of pedagogy and ethics in AI deployment. The aim is to empower learners, enhancing their cognitive abilities while fostering creativity and reasoning. Responsible AI can transform education positively, expanding possibilities without compromising foundational skills.
