The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in genetic counseling is gaining momentum, driven by patient eagerness and rapid technology adoption. At the recent 44th National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) Annual Conference, experts discussed the practical implementation of AI in healthcare. Genetic counselors face important decisions regarding tool selection and patient communication. Colleen Caleshu, MS, CGC, emphasized learning from peers who have successfully adopted AI and leveraging institutional support for effective integration. She highlighted the need for educational sessions on AI literacy and tool evaluation. Maintaining transparency and obtaining patient consent when using AI is crucial; it fosters trust and aligns with ethical practices. Some patients are enthusiastic about AI, viewing it as a means to enhance care accuracy and outcomes. For genetic counselors, understanding these dynamics and best practices is essential for successful adoption of AI in their practices.
