GenAI is transforming information search and production, necessitating up-to-date digital and information literacy training. University librarians play a crucial role in this evolution, ensuring students effectively utilize Generative AI tools like ChatGPT while fostering critical thinking. Despite criticisms regarding the accuracy of AI-generated content, these tools can enhance academic research processes if used wisely. Challenges arise when students rely solely on AI for literature searches, risking academic integrity and skill development. To address this, librarians provide AI literacy training that includes: an introduction to AI vs. academic databases, research question formulation, and the evaluation of AI-generated results. Students learn to create search strings and reflect on the effectiveness of their queries versus AI responses. By encouraging analytical thinking and comparative searches across databases, students can maintain agency in their research. Such practical experience empowers students to leverage AI tools responsibly and enhance their academic research capabilities.
