The EU is launching a new strategy to promote European artificial intelligence (AI) tools, aiming to enhance security and reduce dependence on China in the global tech race. This initiative, highlighted by the Financial Times and Il Sussidiario, will be presented by EU tech chief Henna Virkkunen, focusing on AI advancements in healthcare, defense, and production sectors. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, emphasized the importance of fostering startup ecosystems and innovative industries during her recent speech at Italian Tech Week 2025. The EU aims to simplify regulations that have previously hindered AI development, with new legislation expected in 2026 to harmonize laws across member states. Additionally, mandatory requirements for general AI systems were implemented on August 2. This strategic approach underscores the EU’s commitment to advancing its technological capabilities while ensuring regulatory frameworks support innovation.
