Experienced Software Developers Expected AI to Streamline Tasks, Yet One Experiment Showed a 20% Increase in Time Required

Experienced software developers assumed AI would save them a chunk of time. But in one experiment, their tasks took 20% longer

A recent study by Model Evaluation and Threat Research highlights that AI tools may not enhance productivity as expected. In an experiment with 16 software developers, participants took longer to complete tasks using AI than without. Contrary to their predictions of a 24% reduction in task time, AI usage resulted in a 19% increase in time spent. Developers faced challenges integrating AI outputs with their ongoing projects, necessitating extensive debugging and prompt crafting. This outcome draws into question the prevalent belief in AI’s capacity to boost workplace efficiency. Additionally, research shows that companies have yet to see significant returns on AI investments, with only 5% of AI deployments achieving rapid revenue growth. Economists suggest that while AI may benefit entry-level roles, skilled workers might experience diminishing returns. The findings urge caution in AI implementation, emphasizing the importance of thorough evaluations before widespread adoption.
