Exploring Expectations and Needs for Large Language Model Integration at Bavarian University Clinics

Investigating expectations and needs regarding the use of large language models at Bavarian university clinics

This research survey gathered insights from 120 participants across three demographic groups: medical students (70), physicians (36), and administrative staff (14). The sample primarily focused on psychiatry and neurology. Notably, 46.67% used language models (LLMs) weekly or daily, while 28.33% had never used them. Participants rated their LLM knowledge, with physicians expressing greater confidence than students. Usefulness of LLMs was highlighted, particularly in translating medical reports and summarizing texts. Over a third felt LLMs had a notable impact already, with expectations for workforce changes. Key benefits included time reduction in repetitive tasks, while concerns revolved around trust and data security. Despite a high belief (64.17%) that institutions are unprepared for LLMs, many suggested improvements like enhanced education and better IT infrastructure. The findings emphasize the potential and challenges of integrating LLMs into medical settings, necessitating a strategic approach for effective adoption.
