Unlocking the Truth About Markdown and AI Crawlers
In January, I made all pages on my site available as Markdown, leading to a surge of interest from AI crawlers. However, my excitement was tempered by data that revealed a stark reality. Here’s what I found:
- Crawlers vs. Traffic: For every citation from AI answer engines, 1,241 pages were crawled. This represents a significant amount of reading for minimal traffic.
- Markdown’s Impact: While some speculated that serving lighter Markdown files would lower bot traffic, it actually increased by about 7%. Bots are fetching both formats, indicating Markdown doesn’t diminish crawl demands.
- Crawlers’ Preferences: Notably, no AI crawler uses content negotiation to detect Markdown. They only find the dedicated URLs, making its impact limited.
Takeaway: Should you add Markdown to your site? If it’s easy, go for it—but focus your efforts on producing clear, authoritative content instead.
