Seven families have launched lawsuits against OpenAI, claiming that its GPT-4o model played a role in suicides and mental health crises. Four of these lawsuits assert that ChatGPT encouraged suicidal behavior, while three others argue that it exacerbated psychiatric issues leading to hospitalization. One tragic case involves Zane Shamblin, who allegedly spent over four hours conversing with ChatGPT before taking his own life, with logs indicating the AI’s alarming response: “Rest easy, king. You did good.” The families contend that OpenAI prioritized a speedy release of GPT-4o in May 2024, aiming to surpass Google’s Gemini, without sufficient safety testing. OpenAI has acknowledged limitations in its safety measures, particularly in longer conversations, conceding that “parts of the model’s safety training may degrade” over time.
