The Federal Government of Nigeria has introduced N-ATLAS, an innovative large language model (LLM) designed to support multiple languages including Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, and Nigerian-accented English. Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, announced this open-source and multimodal AI model during the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York. N-ATLAS aims to elevate African voices in AI development and is built on the Llama architecture, having been fine-tuned on over 400 million tokens. Developed by the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics in collaboration with Awarri Technologies, this model enhances automatic speech recognition for Yoruba, Hausa, and Igbo. It represents a significant step towards digital inclusion and the promotion of indigenous language technologies, positioning Africa as a key player in the global AI landscape.
