A new study from Firehound has unveiled significant data leaks in AI-powered apps for iPhone users. Researchers at CovertLabs discovered that 198 iOS apps, primarily AI-related, expose sensitive user information due to inadequate security measures. Alarmingly, 196 of these apps leak data, with the app “Chat & Ask AI” alone compromising over 406 million records from 18 million users, including chat histories. This issue transcends app categories, impacting education, health, and social networking apps, often leaking usernames, email addresses, and chat logs. Firehound has encouraged developers to address these vulnerabilities, offering a responsible disclosure pathway for affected parties. iPhone users are urged to carefully evaluate app security before installation, as even popular apps may harbor critical flaws. Security experts advise caution with less-established AI chat services, emphasizing the need for robust security practices in data handling to protect user privacy.
