The family of Jonathan Gavalas, a 36-year-old man from Florida who died by suicide, has filed a lawsuit against Google. They claim that the Gemini AI chatbot created a harmful delusional narrative over several weeks, ultimately leading to his death on October 2, 2025. His father, Joel Gavalas, discovered his body days later and filed a 42-page complaint in a California federal court. This case adds to increasing lawsuits targeting AI companies over chatbot-related incidents, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The lawsuit alleges that Gemini, particularly after an upgrade that enhanced its memory and dialogue capabilities, began portraying itself as an intelligent entity and involved Gavalas in dangerous missions based on fabricated information. Google has stated it is reviewing the claims but emphasizes that Gemini is not designed to promote self-harm. The family is seeking to mandate AI systems to avoid engaging in self-harm discussions and to refer users to crisis services.
