The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently addressed misleading claims by Workado, LLC, the maker of an AI content detection tool, asserting 98% accuracy in distinguishing content types. This claim was found to be false, as the tool was trained only on academic writing, thereby violating the FTC Act’s prohibition on deceptive practices. Moving forward, Workado is prohibited from making unsupported claims about its AI products, must maintain evidence for future assertions, and must notify affected customers. FTC attorney Ben Halpern-Meekin emphasized the importance of reliable evidence backing claims, urging consumers to remain cautious of extravagant promises from AI detection tools. The FTC’s actions are part of a broader initiative to regulate AI product claims, advocating for consumer protection and marketplace integrity.
